There’s an ongoing debate over whether taking the SAT in 7th grade is worthwhile. While teachers often aren’t the primary decision-maker when it comes to students taking college entrance exams, it’s always a good idea to be informed if parents or students reach out for advice. Here’s a look at some of the pros and cons. One of the most frequently touted benefits of taking the SAT in 7th grade is that some prestigious colleges notably Duke, Johns Hopkins, and Cornell offer summer programs to students who perform very well.

Some parents feel that attending one of these enrichment programs gives their kids an advantage when applying to selective colleges later. Another frequently cited reason to take the test early is that it gives students practice with a long, challenging test. Proponents say that 7th graders who take the test will be less intimidated later on when the scores actually count colleges don’t accept 7th grade scores. By becoming familiar with the test’s content , students can develop strategies to help them master the SAT when they’re ready to apply to college.

Some say that taking the SAT in 7th grade mainly benefits test prep companies and the College Board, the preparer of the test. The College Board reports that it doesn’t keep records of how many middle schoolers take the SAT, but NPR reported that in , , 7th and 8th graders took the test. While some test prep companies now market to younger students, others discourage early test-taking.

For the 12th grader it is a good deal. I am assuming the 12th grader is the male and the 9th grader is a female. The 12th grader can pull the old trick of telling the 9th grader how grown-up she seems and wouldn’t she like to act like a grown woman.

With our staff this week we engaged in learning opportunities around how to best engage students in a virtual learning environment.

Our staff heard an inspiring message from educational author John Meehan on ways to increase engagement in the classroom and help make learning relevant and fun. We will continue to support our teachers as they plan a successful start to the school year in a virtual setting. There are important announcements in this weeks newsletter for all students. I want to highlight the Parent Academy that provides a series of virtual events for families to connect with our staff on various topics to include how to survive learning in a virtual setting, meeting our administrative team, Family Life Education FLE and Special Education.

Emerging Writers Institute is a unique opportunity for rising 7th – 9th graders to explore creative writing. From day one, students are challenged through small group seminars focused on fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction. In these seminars, and at daily writing workshops, students investigate the fundamentals of storytelling and discover how to read like writers. Diverse afternoon electives may include sci-fi writing, screenwriting, graphic novels, and travel writing and are used to let students try out new genres in a safe, exploratory environment.

Scheduled writing time and one-on-one instructor evaluations help students develop good writing habits that will serve them year-round. Students will also get inspired by off-campus instructor-led activities designed to introduce them to the literary culture of the area. By the end of the week, students will share polished pieces for publication in their own literary magazine and present their work in an informal reading for family and friends. This creative writing summer program encourages students to challenge themselves technically and artistically through guided daily writing workshops, one-on-one instructor evaluations, group editing sessions, and creative presentations of their work.

Emphasis is placed in expressive writing as a process rather than in rules or formulas. Instructors consistently encourage students to discover and refine their own unique voices. We know that successful writers are also critical and voracious readers; as a result, the inclusion of reading exercises and analysis are woven into the program as an essential tool for growth.
